Welcome to Reception at Marlbrook Primary School!
Miss Jones is our class teacher and we also have Mrs Pritchard, who is the wonderful class teaching assistant.
It is fantastic to be back after Christmas and having completed our brilliant Nativity performance, the children are excited to continue the daily routine and get stuck in, in the environment.
This half term we are going to be focusing on traditional tales, so far the children have loved acting out ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and bringing in their own teddy to share with the class, supporting some excellent writing opportunities. The big ‘baddie’ in ‘The Three Little Pigs’ has been a hit with all the children, encouraging children to write from the Wolfs perspective in speech bubbles. This story in particular engaged us to investigate the three different houses, looking at the materials and their characteristics, deciding what that material is most suitable for.
The children’s progress within our phonics lessons are continuing to excel as we have given a large focus to segmenting and blending the sounds together, supporting some children to move onto Phase Three sounds, reading a wide range of words and phrases. That also includes the tricky words, which we are constantly recapping to help children read and apply them in their writing.
In Maths, the children love to orally count to very big numbers, which we start every maths session off with, as well as counting down to zero. Our next steps will be counting in 2’s. We have begun our focus on ordering numerals this term to secure counting; the children are now very excited to be learning teen numbers after our focus on 1-10 and understanding ‘more’ and ‘less’. Lots of opportunities have already begun to order items, using fantastic vocabulary relating size and weight and the children have found this good fun.
The race up the Rainbow Reader chart is something that gets the children very enthused with their reading at home as they love watching theirs and their friends name move up the stars. So thank you for your continued support with reading at home, the reading is progressing nicely.
We have had our first Forest School session since being back after Christmas and the children loved it! They have great fun exploring through the trees and observing the changes in the forest. They all enjoyed their cup of hot chocolate to warm them up at the end of the session. It is very cold at the moment so please ensure you bring old but warm clothes for the children to change into in the afternoon, as well as suitable footwear (it can be very muddy).
- Forest school is every Wednesday afternoon.
A very exciting event this half term will be our Bedtime Stories evening, on Wednesday 31st January, 5.00pm-5.45pm. It is an opportunity for children to come back into school in their Pajamas, to cosy down and listen to some their favourtie stories in school with their friends.
