We would like to welcome back all the children and their families to what we hope will be an exciting year. We do hope that you managed to enjoy at least some time away and found time to relax for a few days with your children. We are glad to say that the children have returned to school smartly dressed, polite, positive and eager to learn.
There is something special about a new school year which we love. For everyone, children and staff, there is a sense of anticipation and excitement in the air as they know things will be different. Each year is the start of a new chapter and, in some cases, a new book. This past week has been no exception. We had a few butterflies on the first morning but these have been replaced with happy smiley faces and cheery ‘Good mornings.’
Our topic work this term will be centred around local geography. In Science, we will be learning about living things, the children will be finding out about animals and humans. In art we will be investigating line and colour where the children will be working with a range of media.
P.E will takes place twice a week- Class 2O Monday and Thursday. Class 2H and 2M Tuesday and Thursdays. One of our sessions will be gymnastics and the other session, which will take place outdoors, will be netball. Please ensure children have the correct P.E kit in school all week. As the weather gets colder the children might need tracksuit bottoms for our outdoors session. Please make sure that all items are clearly named as children often get their PE kit muddled.
Reading continues to be a priority in Year 2 and we would urge you to hear your child read as often as possible. It is important that the children are also given the opportunity to talk about what they have read and answer questions as this helps them to understand what they are reading. We will hear the children read throughout the week but we would like to stress that this will not be on a daily basis.
In English, the children will be writing stories, instructions and explanations. We will be encouraging the children to write with more independence and use a wider range of interesting vocabulary.
In maths we will be focussing on all four number operations. The children will be using written and practical methods to embed this area of mathematics.
Your child will be given homework on a Monday. We will alternate between maths and English homework. Spelling will be given on a Monday to be tested on a Friday. The children will be given the opportunity to working with the spellings in class during the week. If your child is absent on the day new spellings are given, please remind them that they need to collect a copy on their return. A few minutes a night spent on these, really helps children retain information for longer.
If you have any concerns or queries please come in and speak to us. The mornings can sometimes be a very busy time and it might not always be possible to discuss things but we are happy to see you after school. Wednesday is best avoided as we have staff meetings.
We already have one or two items of lost clothing so can we ask that you name your child’s uniform as this will make it easier to return any misplaced items. If your child does come home without items of clothing please let us know straight away so that we can find it.
We are looking forward to meeting you all this term.
Mrs Matthews, Mrs Hudson and Miss Overton
