We would like to welcome back all the children and their families to what we hope will be an exciting year. We are glad to say that the children have returned to school smartly dressed, polite, positive and eager to learn.
There is something special about a new school year which we love. For everyone, children and staff, there is a sense of anticipation and excitement in the air as they know things will be different. Each year is the start of a new chapter and, in some cases, a new book.
Reading continues to be a priority in Year 2 and we would urge you to hear your child read as often as possible. It is important that the children are also given the opportunity to talk about what they have read and answer questions as this helps them to understand what they are reading. We will hear the children read throughout the week but we would like to stress that this will not be on a daily basis.
In English, the children will be writing stories, instructions and explanations. We will be encouraging the children to write with more independence and use a wider range of interesting vocabulary.
In maths we will be focussing on all four number operations. The children will be using written and practical methods to embed this area of mathematics.
Our topic work this term will be centred around local geography. In Science, we will be learning about living things, the children will be finding out about animals and humans. In art we will be investigating line and colour where the children will be working with a range of media. We will be visiting the local area at some point throughout the term and will let you know details nearer the time.
Your child will be given homework on a Friday and this should be returned by the Friday of the following week. We will alternate between maths and English homework. Spelling will be given on a Friday to be tested on the following Friday. The children will be given the opportunity to work with the spellings in class during the week. A few minutes a night spent on these, really helps children retain information for longer. Should your child be absent when homework and spellings are given, please encourage them to ask their subject teacher for it on their return.
P.E will takes place twice a week- Class 2R Monday and Thursday. Class 2H and 2M Thursday and Friday. One of our sessions will be gymnastics or dance. The other session will take place outdoors. Please ensure children have the correct P.E kit in school all week. As the weather gets colder the children might need tracksuit bottoms for our outdoors session.
Now that the children are in Year 2, we will be working on developing their independence and organisational skills. Please encourage your child to be as independent as possible in the morning when they come into school.
If you have any concerns or queries please come in and speak to us. The mornings can sometimes be a very busy time and it might not always be possible to discuss things but we are happy to see you after school. Wednesday is best avoided as we have staff meetings immediately after school.
Please make sure that all clothing is clearly named so that we can return lost items quickly and efficiently.
Children should also bring a water bottle as well as their lunch time drink in order to remain hydrated throughout the day.
We are looking forward to meeting you all this term.
Mrs Matthews, Mrs Hudson and Mrs Rutterford.
